The challenge…

Gerald had been smoking for the past 50 years and recently had a heart attack. He realised, “This was the wake-up call I needed to stop smoking and improve my health.”

He’d tried to stop many times over the years but always went back to smoking - this time, he was determined to stop smoking for good and improve his health.

Our support…

We supported Gerald through one-to-one guidance and sent him his nicotine replacement therapy by post. He had patches and an inhalator to start with and then gradually weaned off the patches.

The hardest obstacle for Gerald to stop was that his wife still smoked. He overcame this by understanding his cravings, finding habits to replace them and learning that they do pass.

Through the programme, Gerald learned that he needed to plan ahead to be busy when he knew cravings would hit - for example, he knew he’d want a cigarette after dinner, so instead, he would take the dog for a walk.

My coach was amazing; they were able to support my health and wellbeing while I was stopping smoking. They told me exactly what I needed to hear and explained things in a way to me that really made sense and made me think about the habits I had and how to overcome them.

What happened…

Gerald successfully stopped smoking and continues to be smoke-free.

I am slowly starting to feel healthier after quitting, and I’m much happier now. I would encourage anyone wanting to stop smoking to get in touch and join the service.
